so after much research and remembering the weather when I was in the bahamas last august, I've decided on PR. being mostly puerto rican and never having been there I feel like I should go. I'm going to be staying in a fabulous spa hotel (which I would never be able to afford if it wasn't the off-season), so even if it does rain a lot I will just have to get a lot of pampering. what also helped with this decision is last night I posted to the lonely planet website, the thorn tree, which was a great resource when I went to India, and asked about the weather and if it would rain all the time and if I should be concerned about tropical storms. these were the two replies I received:
Hi-
I live in Old San Juan--
online weather forecasts for the Caribbean are almost NEVER accurate. it hasn't rained in San Juan at all this week, for example, and when it does rain, it typically only does so for an hour or so and then stops. As for hurricanes, PR rarely gets touched... if anything, some wind and rain, but there hasn't been major damage here for awhile, and we haven't been affected at all by any of them this year.
and my second reply:
I agree with novoarte, when I lived there I moved in August and it doesn't really rain all that much. Like #1 says it'll rain for about an hour and then be nice the rest of the day. Take an umbrella because when it does rain it pours, but I'd go.
so I booked my trip. hooray!
I ignore most compliments thrown at me on the street because they are usually from piggish men who, even when they say something nice, seem to do it in a lecherous way. I often hear "nice abs" or "wow, you're HOT" "great tattoos!" and crap like that, but once in a while a WOMAN compliments me and I actually take those to heart. one woman once stopped me on a train platform to tell me she wished she had my tiny waist and various women have complimented me on my stomach and asked for ab-advice, which is always really nice and I appreciate those compliments because I know they are not coming from a place of skeeviness. yesterday, while making myself a cup of green tea by the coffee machine in my office, a random female co-worker who I have never even seen before stopped behind me and said "you have AMAZING calf muscles!" LOL! how weird is that? I don't know why I thought that was so funny but it's definitely a new one for me. ;)

it is unfortunate that people see adjectives as gendered. forbidding the use of certain words in relation to certain genders only aids in the power that those words can hold, and the hurt they can cause to those who buy into them. it is wiser to use the words repeatedly, and in ways perhaps not originally intended so that the words themselves lose the meaning that is attached to them and become fluid. ideally, someone should be able to use the word massive to describe something without causing shame or hurt, and ideally, someone should be able to mention someone who is female (or male) and not have to contend with a flood of assumptions in response.

And I think that tackling the issue from the language POV is interesting. However, I wonder if the shallow, marketing culture that is prevalent in the US can be refuted in this way. It just seems completely ubiquetus.
Anyway, I was making light of the tip-toeing that often happens between people, blah blah blah.
Maybe I am just forever traumatized b/c I referred to a friend's ass as tremendous and meant it 1000% as a compliment. I expect to hear about this for only 10 more years or so (it has been 9 or 10 years since the Incident now).

Mostly Puerto Rican would be a good name for a band. . . (but not in a Poor Black Teen-agers kind of way - who were all white kids for those who are curious).
